Hurt So Good

Hurt So Good; Sometimes a collaboration does just that. Another N.A.S.A. track has broken and let me just say "Spacious Thoughts" literally gives me the chills. I've got a fever, and the only prescription is more Spirit of Apollo. No, not more cowbell Bruce Dickenson! More North America South America!! Bill my insurance.

Tom Waits was such an amazing choice for this collaboration. I might like this better than the blitzfest that was Kanye/Lykke/Santi's "Gifted"! Please, please listen.

In perpetration for my inevitable obsession with this record I'm cleaning house. Watch out MGMT, Mr. Oizo, TV on the Radio; there simply isn't enough time for me to stalk you all anymore. Someone will be eliminated from the inner circle tonight. And no, NO one has immunity...

Just Peace,
LTK

Drug Dee-la

So Lily Allen's cover of Britney's "Womanizer" hit the airwaves today and the buzz is nonstop. Ladyhawke covered it on Radio One as well, but so far in my book the cover crown goes to Lily. After listening to "Everyone's At It" as well as four other leaked tracks off her much-anticipated sophmore release, I have a feeling It's Not Me, It's You won't disappoint. The lyrics on this one had me at hello. Okay, so maybe the highlighted portion...

I don't know much,
But I know this for certain,
That is the sun,
Poking its head round the curtain.

Now please can we leave,
I'd like to go to bed now.
It's not just the sun,
That is hurting my head now.

I'm not trying to say,
That I'm smelling of roses,
But when will we tire,
Of putting shit up our noses.

I don't like staying up,
Staying up past the sunlight.
It's meant to be fun,
And this just doesn't feel right.

Why can't we all,
All just be honest,
Admit to ourselves,
That everyone's on it.

From grown politicians,
To young adolescents,
Prescribing themselves,
Anti-depressants.

How can we start to tackle the problem,
If you don't put your hands up,
And admit that you're on them.

The kids are in danger,
They're all getting habits,
Because from what I can see,
Everyone's at it.
Everyone's at it.
Everyone's at it.
Everyone's at it.

I get involved,
But I'm not advocating.
Got an opinion,
Yeah, you're well up for slating.

So you've got a prescription,
And that makes it legal.
I find the excuses,
Overwhelmingly feeble.

You go to the doctor,
You need pills to sleep in.
Well if you can convince him,
Then I guess that's not cheating.

So your daughter's depressed,
We'll get her straight on the prozac.
But little do you know,
She already takes crack.

Why can't we all,
All just be honest,
Admit to ourselves,
That everyone's on it.

From grown politicians,
To young adolescents,
Prescribing themselves,
Anti-depressants.

How can we start to tackle the problem,
If you don't put your hands up,
And admit that you're on them.

The kids are in danger,
They're all getting habits,
Because from what I can see,
Everyone's at it.
Everyone's at it.
Everyone's at it.
Everyone's at it.

First Love

Ahhh... first love. Really it was tetherball, kicking boys I liked, and eating Kool Aid straight from the packet.

But just for today, Animal Collective is my real first romance. Not only did Strawberry Jam rock my freaking world last year, but AC is shaping up to take me (and you) by storm in 2009. One song is proof enough for me. Drop whatever you are doing and go listen to this stream.

Nothing Compares 2 You ...

... Or Does It? Time for a TV Tunes Flashback! Well, sort of. Enough ambiguity for you?

I know by this point the Chuck parody of The O.C. is old news, but I was watching reruns of the gorgeous troubled teens soap opera the other day - remember, judgement is a sin - and when "Dice" came on montage style, I was reminded how genius Josh Schwartz is for being able to poke fun at his own absolutely gratuitous dramatization. L-O-V-E it. Or maybe just Zachary Levi. He might need to marry me.

Check out the original first:

Now the hilarious parody:

Now download the song if you don't already fall asleep to it every night.

Write What You Know

From the west to the east I have flown to be near you
I have come all this way to be close, to be here with you
And now, all my heart I will lay down precisely at your feet

My beloved, oh my sweet
All the gifts you have given me
The patience and the peace,
Cherry blossoms and the candy,
I am yours, I am yours
For as long, for as long as you will have me

Dearest one, I had a dream
I mouthed the words,
The sound came out,
I spoke to you in Japanese
Oh, my love I cannot see, I heard your name
I know at once there was no place I’d rather be
All at once there was no place that I would rather be

From the west to the east I have flown to be near you
I have come all this way to be close, to be here with you
And now, all my heart I will lay down precisely at your feet

My beloved, oh my sweet
All the gifts you have given me
The patience and the peace,
Cherry blossoms and the candy,
I am yours, I am yours
For as long, for as long as you will have me

I packed my bag, I’m on my way
I am prepared for any season
I am prepared to stay
Here is my heart, my beating heart
Oh, how I’m longing for this love affair to start
How I’m longing for this love affair to finally start

From the west to the east I have flown to be near you
I have come all this way to be close, to be here with you
And now, all my heart I will lay down precisely at your feet

My beloved, oh my sweet
All the gifts you have given me
The patience and the peace,
Cherry blossoms and the candy,
I am yours, I am yours
For as long, for as long as you will have me

[… Japanese …]

From the west to the east I have flown to be near you
I have come all this way to be close, to be here with you
And now, all my heart I will lay down precisely at your feet

My beloved, oh my sweet
All the gifts you have given me
The patience and the peace,
Cherry blossoms and the candy,
I am yours, I am yours
For as long, for as long as you will have me

Around the World

North America South America / N.A.S.A. this way comes... Everyone has been talking about their "Gifted" single because, let's face it, getting Kanye West, Lykke Li, and Santogold on the same track is like audible gold. Talk about triple threat. Get ready for the madness that will be The Spirit of Apollo out this February 17, 2009.

N.A.S.A. (North America South America) is an international collective of musicians spanning a wide spectrum of musical genres, centered around Squeak E. Clean (Sam Spiegel) and DJ Zegon (Ze Gonzales). Sam and Ze met in April of 2003 at a friend's studio and began making music together the following day.

At first they sampled rare Brazilian records from the 60's and 70's to make tracks. However, what started as two crate diggers making music for the fun of it soon developed into something much bigger. Having forged a strong friendship through their passion for music, Sam and Ze decided to make a record with all of their heroes and favorite musicians.

The idea was to bring people from different worlds together through their shared inspiration and love of music. Thus, N.A.S.A. was born, with crazy collaborations like Ol' Dirty Bastard (Wu-Tang Clan), Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), and Fatlip (Pharcyde) on one track, David Byrne (Talking Heads), Chali 2na (Jurassic 5), and Gift of Gab (Blackalicious) on another, and even a pairing of Tom Waits with Kool Keith.

Soon Sam and Ze realized they could expand the concept to encompass an entire record. The idea is to ignore all of the boundaries and borders that are in place to keep people divided, such as musical genre, race, politics, geography, language, etc. As a result, they gathered the craziest and most eclectic collection of musicians ever assembled on one album in the hope that they can show, through music, that all those superficial divisions are an illusion.

N.A.S.A. proves we are all one race of human beings interested in collaboration and unity, ignoring preconceptions, and transcending genre definitions.
LA LA LA Loves it.

Get Better

Forget all your politics for a while.
Let the color schemes arrive.
Come onboard, it's a curious sight.
Absorbing sound that's never been right.
Never ahead of, never behind it.
Occasionally guarded, just keeps us surrounded.
It's luck.

Everything's gonna get lighter, even if it never gets better.
Ahhh.

I propose a less serious boat.
But don't mistake it for a party of jokes, who are never ahead of, never behind us.
Floating in circles there's more to remind them of less.

Everything's gonna get lighter, even if it never gets better.
Done. I'm done. I'm done.

Miracle Drug

Boy, oh, boy I'm feeling high
It just happens to me at night
Are you ready for signs?
Tie my choke up on this punchline
Jumping with no parachute
Studly when I start to shoot
My load is pretty heavy,
but you swallow 'cuz you think I'm cute

Two times might be one too much
I'm losing sight, I'm losing touch
of the reality I was facing when I was growing up.

If you front, you can go fuck yourself in the back
All those beats, all those rhymes just kept blowin' my stack
On the internet you can tick this, I got the good grades
Only four singles, our popularity don't fade

Two times might be one too much
I'm losing sight, I'm losing touch
of the reality I was facing when I was growing up.

I put my name on the map
My pop, you're calling me that
Your boyfriend's harrassing me
and you should tell him to stop.
I'm off another level
I got upgraded, I dedicate this song to my fans on steroids

I am the short circuit of this electronic
I am the start-up chick and my voice bionic
I got a good team
I'm on your widescreen
I'm all about my green since I turned fourteen

Two times might be one too much
I'm losing sight, I'm losing touch
of the reality I was facing when I was growing up.

Extra Extra

Maybe it's just our culture, but Americans seems to want want want, more more more. This year that gluttonous concept might be a little more difficult to pursue, as the economy is currently SOL. Sure gas prices are now under $2.00 in Seattle (AH-mazing!) but with the holidays fast approaching, wallets are growing emaciated and families are finding themselves hard-pressed to give their kids the kind of Christmas they hope for.

On the inside, I'm rejoicing. For too long the holidays have revolved around commercialism, with the spirit of good cheer taking a backseat. Why would Americans care about things like friends and family when we can be at the mall watching a grandma spit in the face of minimum-wage employee because they don''t have Tickle-Me Elmo in stock. It's sickening how materialistic such a special day has become, despite honorable intentions. By gifting loved ones their material desires, we get to express our love in physical form. Hopefully though this year, necessity/scarcity will force us to be more creative with our expressions. Instead of saying I love you THIS much in dollar signs, we can pick one of a million ways to show we care without spending a cent.

So where was I going with all this? The extra extra/excess theme has even surfaced in music. When Coldplay released The Prospekt's March EP this week, I thought nothing less of another attempt at capitalizing on Viva La Vida's succcess. Then, when my MPR podcast free song arrived this morning, "Champagne in Paper Cups" from Death Cab's deluxe edition of Something About Airplanes, I found myself getting an odd twinge of irritation. DELUXE, SPECIAL, BONUS, COLLECTOR'S EDITION; these were labels that, as I scanned through my music library started to both amaze and frustrate me.

What's with the whole supersize mentality? When did we get so hungry for more more more? Particularily in art/music - wasn't it intended to be minimalist? Maybe we need to feel like we're getting more for our dollar, but in reality we're just getting more for more dollars.
  • Number of LTK's songs with SPECIAL EDITION in the album title: 79
  • Number of LTK's songs with BONUS in the album title: 106
  • Number of LTK's songs with DELUXE in the album title: 186
And that's not counting everything I've been too lazy to properly label...

Electronic Renaissance

YouTube has gone bananas with this whole live feed thing. Broadcasting live from San Francisco this past Saturday is just the beginning of the newest electronic movement. I mean who watches TV on a television anymore? People stuck in the twentieth century apparently!

Belle & Sebastian - Electronic Renaissance [Protected]

So Katy Perry performed, Akon, stupid as ever Soulja Boy, and a bunch of other people I don't care too much about. But one bright spot was the always adorable Julia Nunes, who first become famous with a series of YouTube videos of her covering awesome songs with her ukulele. Yes UKUELE. How badass is that? They should call it U-cool-ele. Yeah, I really went there...

If you haven't seen her awesomeness yet, scoot on over to YT and check out some more videos. Then listen to a few shwanky covers here, and after you promptly fall head over heels, hit up iTunes for her first original album (her latest release has yet to make it on the music service).

Chasing the American Dream, Up on the Big Screen

Whether you're a hater or an appreciator, America can't stop talking about Kanye these days. The man attracts more controversy than Zac Efron does 12-yr old girls (and sexuality disputes). With his latest album release standing as no exception. Out this Sunday, November 23, 808's & Heartbreaks seems to have broken the glass ceiling on critique. Love it? Hate it? Can't make up your mind about it? Maybe my track by track breakdown will help.

1. Say You Will
If robots could sing love songs, ballads more like it. In the over 6-minute record introduction, Kanye uses the most minimal of lyrics (maybe 20 different words) on the CD's most expansive track. "When I grab your neck / I touch your soul / Take off your cool / Then lose control / Hey, hey, hey / Don't say you will / You will, you will / Hey, hey, hey / Don't say you will / If you will / I pray you will..." The second, instrumental half of the track is actually preferable; akin to sitting in on some new-wave electronica choir practice.
Bottom Line: C

2. Welcome to Heartbreak (Featuring Kid Cudi)
Despite the ominous opening, this is the closest thing to actual melody I could find in eleven attempts at West singing. Maybe I should attribute the success (?) to the soundtrack-like chord repetition, or the fact that West allows an actual singer with vocal range into the mix. With all that the rapper has been through this year, I don't know why he chose to attribute "Welcome to Heartbreak" to a series of visions about the hardship of having too much wealth. It's a little less relatable than heartbreak should be. Whereas losing someone close to you, or the pain of a failed relationship - both of which Kanye has experienced very publicly - would have made more compelling subject matter than telling us how painful it is to leave your Godsister's wedding before they cut the cake. He probably had to catch a plane to Tokyo. Rough, right?
Bottom Line: C +

3. Heartless
If you haven't heard this one than you're probably not living in a cave, just ignoring everything after "Love Lockdown." It's been difficult for most of us fans to move past the Good Life into this unknown creative territory. Certainly not Top 40, "Heartless" still delivers in many ways. That crazy inescapable hook grabbed me from one second in. "In the night / I hear 'em talk / Coldest story ever told / Somewhere far along this road / He lost his soul / To a woman so heartless..." I guess this is the Heartbreak portion of the album, although a fair share of the 808 seems to be utilized. Crazy keyboard synth creates the effect of flute pipes, in partnership with thudding bass, it's enough visual for this listener to feel implemented into some tribal circle singing cautionary tales about the danger of the female species. Yeah, I loves it.
Bottom Line: B +

My favorite track off the album. The lyrics are simple, and nothing less than what you'd expect from K West. Despite some self-posturing, this is Kanye's response to 808 critique; as if he anticipated the outcry against the use of the auto tune and penned this in preemptive retaliation. "It's amazing / I'm the reason / Everybody fired up this evening / I'm exhausted / Barely breathing / Holding on to what I believe in / No matter what, you'll never take that from me / Me reign is as far as the eye can see." Though the song could do without the obnoxious cameo by Young Jeezy, I love the anthem-like quality of this track. I feel like war painting my face, throwing a paparazzi against the wall for looking at me funny, and getting gratuitously arrested. The last part being what Kanye does best.
Bottom Line: A -

5. Love Lockdown
I don't watch the VMAs unless there's promise of a crazy episode and/or Ms. Spears. And since last year had both (I was hoping Kanye would verbally assault Brit Brit for stealing his thunder yet again) I tuned into see the premiere of "Love Lockdown" in the finale. I have to admit I was impressed by the performance, thinking to myself what a risk this was for Kanye artistically. I also believed naively that it would be one genre-breaking track nestled in the middle of several familiar College-Dropoutish hits. How silly of me... Still, based on his live performance, a visually compelling music video, and the T-minus 321 remix (and 501 others) this song pushed T-Pain out of the way for the special auto tune section of my heart.
Bottom Line: B

6. Paranoid (Featuring Mr. Hudson)
Upon first listen, I thought I might have taken a Forget-Me-Now and ended up in some 1980s dancehall. Leaked onto the internet as "Anyway," this is one of the most danceable tracks on the record, which isn't saying much. With a schizophrenic beat, unapologetic synthesizers, and haphazard harmonizing I would need to be on something to really get down to this one. Still, "Paranoid" manages some sort of let's just dance appeal.
Bottom Line: C

7. RoboCop
As a woman, I felt some obligation to hate this out of the gate based solely on lyrical content. After a couple of listens though, the thumping bass and ridiculous sentiment grew on me. I won't pretend to fully understand wtf he's saying; like what exactly is a robocop? How does one move it like a robocop? Is it just some crazy obnoxious girlfriend who asks too many questions, is all up in your business, and thinks robotic 2-stepping is dancing? I'd invent my own crazy concise term for that mouthful too. Despite heavy use of the auto tune, and one methodical beat (a formulaic approach to the entire album), this one is slowly growing on me. As long as I turn the speakers way up and put my female conscience on mute.
Bottom Line: B -

8. Street Lights
I would find this track more redeeming, if once again, it was instrumental. Kanye's monotonous recitation is more than enough to make me want to rip my hair out. I know this song is supposed to be some great metaphor for knowing your destination in life and blah blah blah but I just can't tolerate enough of the boring delivery to stay awake for the message.
Bottom Line: C

9. Bad News
A definite bright spot after it's predecessor. And here's why: A talented someone could make the most badass dance remix of this track. Although relatively quiet, and subtly masochistic, this song has one of the most promising beats. Maybe it's my inner DJ calling, but a girl can still dream of finding good news in an RAC or A-Trak reworking.
Bottom Line: C +

10. See You in My Nightmares (Featuring Lil Wayne)
I know everyone kisses the ground he walks on, but Lil Weeze doesn't add anything to this already anemic track. Leaked as "Tell Everybody (That You Know)," boring synth, no percussion, and overly-repetitive (and ridiculous) lyrics make this a complete fail. "Tell everybody that you / that I don't love you no more / and that's one thing that you know..." Childish and unoriginal. Auto tune or not, this is not the insight I expect from West.
Bottom Line: D

11. Coldest Winter
This is West's most admiral attempt at a ballad, perhaps saved for the finale on purpose. "On lonely nights I start to fade / Her love's a thousand miles away / Memories made in the coldest winter / Goodbye my friend / Will I ever love again?" Instead of alienating his female audience, West embraces the sorrow of a lost love (his mother), putting himself in a much more vulnerable position than the angry, female-hating stance heard on earlier tracks. Though still lacking that special ingredient to make the song completely memorable, the listener is left with a resolute, even serene acceptance as the album comes to a close.
Bottom Line: B

Since this is a live track, I'm itching for the accompanying video. Never having personally caught a Kanye show (budget-breaking), I have heard that he doesn't disappoint. From the rhymes alone, I'm intrigued. The album as a whole lacks substance on this front, so it's nice to hear West freestyle from the heart. Delving into the philosophical realm with questions about the ever-fading line between reality and celebrity, West talks about his Pinocchio-like desire for flesh and blood. "Do you think I sacrifice real life / For all the fame? / And flashing lights? / There is no Gucci I can buy / There is no Louis Vuitton to put on / There is no [ ] that they could sell / To get my heart out of this hell / And my mind out of this jail / There is no clothes that I could buy / That could turn back in time / There is no vacation spot I could fly / That could bring back a piece of real life / What does it feel like ... / To live a real life ?" Now why did it take a bonus track to get my Kanye back?
Bottom Line: A -

LTK Says:

As much as I want to give Kanye's artistic risk a double thumbs up, the content supporting the adventure was an utter disappointment, save for a few standout tracks. Although we at GDM support creative endeavors, we believe just doing something different for difference sake is not enough. Change should be made in the name of evolution, forward momentum, or growth. Someone as big as West has reached a career pinnacle where artistic freedom knows no bounds. He has free reign to do whatever he wants, but it doesn't mean that he should. Although I commend his effort, the prowess of West's earlier work has set such high expectations, I'm left wanting more.
Bottom Bottom Line: B / B -

Superstar

Pretending is posh. We all love to do it. So just for today I'm putting on my best coked-out celebrity impression and serving you up the greatest gift ever: my completely pretentious and at times contrived iTunes celebrity playlist. Seriously, how many songs do you think these people a.) chose themselves b.) listen to on a regular basis c.) select out of hipster obligation? I don't know where an individual celeb's music taste begins and the image they're trying to portray ends...

You listen to Miles Davis, Nick Cave, Jeff Buckley, and MGMT? We get it, you're cultured and yet also cool. Oh and yes, that's a nice big picture of my face on the right to go along with my selections. I got to do it up just like my money loving friends @ Apple.

Lydia's "I'm Effortlessly Cultured & Cool" (and Coked Out) Celebrity Playlist
But seriously, these are some of my favorite tracks. And my publicist didn't have to tell me so...

1. Otis Redding - That's How Strong My Love Is
I hesitate to say "greatest recording ever" because of the finality implied in that statement. But I will say this track literally moves my heart each time it's played. The very epitome of love song, Otis's earth-shattering declaration of sentiment inspires my faith in music, and men.
2. The Clash - Clampdown
My all-time favorite band, and favorite album. With lyrical content beyond the zeitgeist, London Calling defines punk-rock with it's politically-charged rebelliousness. Joe Strummer is a cultural icon, self-proclaimed punk-rock warlord, and my personal hero. I miss him everyday.
For only being around about 10 years, their music is both groundbreaking and timeless. This live track shocks me into silence with its beauty.
4. The Smiths - There is a Light That Never Goes Out
Another legendary group - God Bless the Queen. Anyone who can inspire romanticism with lyrics about dying in a horrific car accident deserves props.
5. The Magnetic Fields - I Think I Need a New Heart
Stephen is a genius. This set - 69 songs in all - was so conceptually brilliant it changed my entire outlook on "love song." Some people can say more than enough in 27 seconds.
I didn't even know what my ears were hearing before I loved this experimental/prog rock. Even more amazing is the blitzfest that is their live show. You won't know what hit you...
7. Animal Collective - Peacebone
8. Sam Cooke - Nothing Can Change This Love
Once I dupe some poor sap into marrying me, this will be our first dance. I plan on emphasizing the "Leave me and run" part for my hubby in case he needs an escape clause. Sam Cooke is up there with my all time favorites. Everything he touches turns to instant classic.
Some haters try and deny it, but Pablo Honey changed alternative music forever. Thom Yorke and the boys lent even more awesomeness to Baz Luhrman's stunning Romeo & Juliet.
10. JR Walker and the All-Stars - Shotgun
Further proof I should have been born in the 1960's.
11. Ray Charles - Hallelujah I Love Her So
I gotta go out for my Seattle friends. This album was beyond huge on it's own, but when it made No. 53 on KEXP listener's list of Top 903 albums, their success only solidified. Built to Spill I wanted you on here too - you know I love you.
13. Mavis Staples - We Shall Not Be Moved
14. Nina Simone - Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out
Besides no one being able to TOUCH Nina on the talent front, can't we all relate to these lyrics?
15. TV on the Radio - Stork & Owl
Another amazing album from start to finish. Still, more powerful is the memory I have of my mother singing this one to me everyday before school. She knew her voice wasn't beautiful, but it was the sentiment, and the message of the song more than made up for it.
17. The Rolling Stones - Brown Sugar
Dad needs a place on my list too. I've never met anyone who knows more about 1960's music then his encyclopedia of a brain. I'm so thankful he can relive some of the magic of that decade with me; his favorite band, his favorite rock song of all time being a good start.
19. Gang of Four - Damaged Goods
It was really difficult to decide between tracks on Entertainment!. This is one CD I picked up in a quirky used store and never looked back.
20. Brenda Holloway - Every Little Bit Hurts
I don't know much about Brenda other than she was beautiful, underrated, and makes my heart break for her in under 3 minutes.
21. The Kills - Getting Down
Tribalisitic rock as my dad calls it, The Kills have the "return to golden times" in rock n roll feel about them that's hard to ignore, even if you wanted to.
22. Bruce Springsteen - For You
Whatever female masochism I possess makes me love this song. Every girl wants someone to save them from themselves at some point in their existence (Don't lie); it doesn't hurt if that someone is sexy 1984 tight-denim dressing Bruce Springsteen.
24. Neutral Milk Hotel - Oh Comely
I think this record changes the life of whoever covets it.

Yeah, it's a long one. But for today I'm famous and I can do whatever the "F" I want. Pass me some more of the good stuff Lohan...

Peace, Love, and Total Pretension,
LTK

Breaking it Up

Stay tuned for my track by track break down/breaking it up of K West's controversial 808's and Heartbreaks this Saturday (I'm currently listening to only this on repeat) - the album ia out next Tuesday. Times are hard; you deserve to know if this one's worth your hard-earned Abrahams...

In the meantime, snag this shwanky Lykke Li remix, as well as a bonus Friendly Fires cover of Lykke's "I'm Good, I'm Gone." Darn, no voice box here...

What Do You Think Will Happen Next?

... I'm honestly curious. I have been embarrassed to call myself an American for several years now, but with election of Obama (My first presidential vote!!), and the subsequent wave of enthusiasm for change, I feel a renewed optimism in both our country and it's citizens.

This song is full of "Yes I Can"s, but the real American sentiment of the zeitgeist is Yes We Can. That bright, bright, bright sunshiney day might not be so far away... And in the spirit of change, or the anything is possible, I'm changing our name. Goodbye UAFT, hello Get Down Moses. If you haven't guessed by now, The Clash is my all time favorite band, Joe Strummer is my complete idol/hero/marital fantasy, and this song title off Streetcore just seemed appropriate.

From the soundtrack of The Future is Unwritten, an amazing documentary about Joe. Just listening to his words about the power of the individual, the impact we have on each other, and the potential in each one of us for change, gives me chills. Miss you everyday JS...

The Kinks - Something Better Beginning

Small Town

Small town? The Nextdoor Neighbors are anything but.

Hailing from Olympia, Washington this cute-as-punch duo are every indie label's dream. In the history of Casio keyboards, two girls have never been so badass. Self -defined "Electro-folkhoppers," Jessie's vocals capture the spirit of a raw Sandi Thom, or at times a younger, quirkier Leslie Feist, while Kathy (who I'm pretty sure I got to work with at Starbucks!) channels the quirky electro-genius of Stephin Merrit on hip-hop. Think younger generation of Stars, Metric, Little Dragon. Or as Bicycle Records puts it:
Jessie Hill supplies the words and melodies, framed by the electronic alchemy of Kathy Cote. Whether you call it folktronic or electro-folk-hop, the psychic link between these two neighbors is clearly heard in this organically-grown bedroom pop.
I love the idea of bedroom pop. What's garage band revival anyway? We all know the best tunes come from the heart and soul of the house. Lucky for us Northwesterns, we seem to have caught the lovebug for The NN right away. Maybe it's because East-Coasters don't have the advantage of attending badass showcase performances like the one @ the U-District Barnes and Noble this Thursday, November 20 @ 8 pm. I encourage all long-term or spanking new fans to attend the performance which will dent your wallet all of ZERO dollars.

When you inevitably fall in love with what you hear/see, swing by the amazing West Seattle Easy Street records on December 12 at the same time. This one will cost you (only) five big ones, but The Nextdoor Neighbors are headlining! You know you want to...

Straight Outta Compton

Okay not really, but it would be interesting if she was. This must be my umpteenth recent post about Britney, but I don't care. All the cool kids are doing it, and we all know peer pressure works for everything.

Barnum and Bailey eat your heart out - here comes the real Circus. As her new album begins to leak all over the blog scene, listeners are getting the first real taste of Britney's Blackout 2.0. Take it for every overproduced piece of deliciousness it is, and you (and your dancing shoes) won't be disappointed!

All eyes on me in the center of the ring
Just like a circus
When I crack that whip everybody gonna trip
Just like a circus
Don't stand there watching me
Follow me
Show me what you can do
Everybody let go
We can make the dancefloor just like a circus

LTK Recommends: Womanizer, Circus, Kill the Lights, Shattered Glass, If You Seek Amy, Unusual You, Phonography

LTK Says Pass On: Blur, Mannequin, Radar 2.0 (The original is better)
B Spears - Kill the Lights
B Spears - If You Seek Amy [mf]
B Spears - Shattered Glass [mf]
Anyone else hear Lil Wayne's 'Go DJ'?

Na Na Na Na Naa

Seriously, how many Na Na Na's are there in M.I.A.'s "Boyz"?! One of these days when I'm bored I'm going to sit down and tally that shiz up.

Kaiser Chiefs - Na Na Na Na Naa [mf]

Maybe at the same time I can solve the (non) mystery if she's pregnant. Diplo, are you the baby daddy!!? I might just have enough time leftover to count the number of "ah ah's" in "Womanizer." It's just slightly above the number of self-destructive relationships the pop princess has had. Gold ...

Lovers Without Love

this road has all but taught me lessons
about my lonely soul,
i am young and getting wiser,
soon i will grow old
strip my heart from misconceptions,
fill my eyes with grief,
let me make my own connections
in this endless sea

of muscle cars and endless bars,
of shopping centers for the teens,
high price propane,
and crack cocaine,
and lovers without love like me

i see so much my vision is blurry,
in the world i live
if we're to change then we must hurry,
the devil's moving in
love and hate can not see color,
like the human eyes,
so priests and preachers,
parents, teachers,
don't act so damn surprised

it's the world we've made,
we're living in
of greed, lust, and poverty,
of war and pride,
teen suicide,
and lovers without love like me
from topless dances to Marilyn Manson
and lovers without love like me

there's kids in gangs
we have coveted fame
we have sweat shops across the sea
we have abortive mothers,
we hate each other

there's lovers without love
there's lovers without love
there's lovers without love
like me

Indie Rokkers

I am obsessed with Sundance's Live from Abbey Road. Exhibit A:

MGMT - Electric Feel (Live @ Abbey Road) [mf]

Exhibit B (The vocals on this one trip me out so much I love it):

MGMT - Time to Pretend (Live @ Abbey Road) [mf]
MGMT - Indie Rokkers [mf]

Maybe I'm just bias because of how much I'm MADLY in love with Andrew VanWyngarden (pictured above on left). He is absolutely the bees knees. Ben's not too shabby either! Seriously if you haven't had the opportunity to see either season, check out some vids at the official Sundance website here, or search YouTube for a particular band you love.

Sweet About Me

Italians Do It Better. At least Glass Candy thinks so... That's the not-so-subtle title of their label, under which their 2007 debut as a duo: B/E/A/T/B/O/X was produced. Sugary as their name implies, I was one cavity away from a root canal when I finished. The CD itself is just an 808 short of full-fledged computer-produced masochism. Love songs for robots maybe. And yet, it's the kind of music you can instantly take your cool off and dance to. You know you want to!

Lucky for fans, a collection of singles, b-sides, and rarities has also surfaced and I couldn't be more full of beatific joy. Obviously, Mexicans (That's me!) do it pretty darn good too ...

Peace, Love, and Sugar Rush Overloads,

I Can Never Die

... At least some great songs can't.

It's been ages since I had a great TV tunes flashback moment, and pulling out my first season of Veronica Mars had made me nostalgic for one scene, one song in particular. Although the brilliance of V Mars was never fully recognized due to shitty promotion by UPN/CW, the small cult-like following for the show is not unlike critic-darling Arrested Development. Upon hearing the show was canceled, fans of the petite private eye sent network exec Dawn Ostroff the following to persuade her to reconsider:
  • 4848 Snickers Almond Bars
  • 2040 Mars Bars from England (Snicker's Mars Bars are no longer in US production, thus Almond Bars are the closest thing)
  • 510 lbs Marshmallows (In the first season Veronica's best friend Wallace is quoted as saying "You're a marshmallow Veronica Mars")
Total weight = Around 1400 Pounds (Plus individual shipments by other fans)

The Save Veronica campaign has also raised thousands of dollars via PayPal, organized mass purchases of episodes on iTunes, and continues to push for a Veronica Mars movie (Both creator Rob Thomas and star Kristen Bell have spoken enthusiastically about the possibility).

But before all the cancellation madness, there was an amazing first season. The writing, especially the quick-witted dialogue between Veronica and her father Keith, made for unprecedented television chemistry. The use of music on the show was always underplayed, never relied on as a driving force (unlike shows 90210, Gossip Girl, and The O.C.), but instead subtly powerful. Watching "Meet John Smith" just three episodes into the first season, I was once again wowed by the haunting use of Ivy's "Edge of the Ocean." Veronica and ex-boyfriend Duncan Kane are driving to the hospital when the song rises from the background, accenting the scene's romantic tension perfectly. I've always thought the track worked so well as a flashback, the soft beats and quirky electronica are the essence of a summer dream. It didn't take more than a few seconds for the song to speak volumes that even the cleverest dialogue could not.

Music supervisors went on to capitalize on the show's popularity by producing the ever-popular television soundtrack. Ivy does indeed make an appearance with "Ocean City Girl," while other standout tracks include Mike Doughty's "I Hear the Bells" (Before he annoyed us with "27 Jennifers" he rocked my socks), The Format's "On Your Porch," and Spoon's notorious "I Turn My Camera On." All the tracks made stand-out cameos on the show, but none stuck with me quite so well as Ivy's "Edge of the Ocean."

Mike Doughty - I Hear the Bells [mf]
The Format - On Your Porch [mf]
Bonus: Rock Kills Kid - I Turn My Camera On (Spoon Cover) [mf]

Here's another Bonus. Twelve episodes in, Kristen sings "One Way or Another" and doesn't suck! You know you're addicted now...

Save Me

I don't even have words to describe Joan Wasser's musical style. The raspy voice of Wasser, best known for her albums released under Joan as Police Woman, manages to captivate, entrance, and hold the listener in some sort of emotional prison until, after around 4 minutes the track releases us. After hearing she dated Jeff Buckley, my theory that her music would have been just as ethereal in the post-punk wave of the late 1970s is solidified. Simultaneously powerful and innocuous, triumphant and vulnerable, Joan as Police Woman's 2006 Real Life and 2008's To Survive are must must must haves.

Joan as Police Woman - To Be Loved [mf]
Personal favorite off To Survive
Joan as Police Woman - Save Me [mf]
Personal favorite off Real Life

I Love the Dancefloor: AKA Just Wanna Dance

So I've had just about enough of the Seattle doom and gloom mentality. Rain might be inevitable but bad moods are definitely not!

Six Britney tracks leaked and I couldn't be more excited about "If U Seek Amy" which I'm predicting will be the third or fourth single and a HUGE smash hit. The controversial chorus is enough to assure me that B Spears is back on top (pun intended)...

Love Me / Hate Me /
Can't you see what I see? /
All of the boys and all of the girls /
Are begging to If You Seek Amy [Sounds like: F-U-C-K Me]

In other mainstream news, three more Kanye tracks have popped up, including my favorite, "So Amazing," which is, well... amazing. Whatever "Streetlights," "Coldest Winter," "Anyway," and "Tell Everybody That You Know" lack, "Heartless" and "So Amazing" seem to compensate for in spades. I'm still making up my mind about "Robocop." I hated it at first; the lyrics are utterly ridiculous and way too immature for the West I'm used to, but the beat is growing on me. The saving grace for "Love Lockdown" have been the zillion and one remixes that I've learned to love, especially T-Minus and LMFAO's reworkings of the track. 808's here we come - don't leave me in heartbreak...

Kanye West - Love Lockdown (LMFAO Remix) [mf]

Turing the radio dial more towards KEXP and farther away from KISS, how awesome has Ladytron been for my endorphin levels?! Witching Hour has me smitten and I highly recommend this one for purchase. I find myself simultaneously creeped out and comforted by such tracks as "CMYK," "International Deadline," and "Soft Power." And then of course there's the utter danceability of "Weekend" and "Destroy Everything You Touch." As for my personal seal of favortism, that's reserved for "The Last One Standing."

Merging away,
like we did yesterday
wrong direction
The traffic we'll know,
the traffic is slow and thoughtless
The wheel that is still,
on the concrete and green,
away home
And it is alone,
a division unknown,
a split decision

Climbing the floors,
and I'm not running
Through revolving doors,
and you're not driving
The barrier stands,
between your hands and me,
Sorry

You said I made,
you said you said I made,
a bad decision
Said I made a mistake
Fatal without the recognition
But how would we know,
know of that consequence,
had I forseen
Our California hates,
had I not been

Closing the doors,
and I am running
Past video stores,
and you are driving
A barrier stands,
between your hands and me,
Sorry

You have got to be the last one standing
You have got to be the last one standing
You have got to be the last one standing

Ladytron - The Last One Standing [mf]
Ladytron - Weekend [mf]

Seattle, you and your 360 days of darkness can't touch me today...

The "It Might Be Pouring But I'll Do a Rain Dance Anyway" Mixtape

The Kills - Getting Down [mf]
After seeing them play a set on Sundance Channel's Live from Abbey Road, I fell even harder for their very primal approach to rock and roll. One guy, one girl; basic beats & bass meet tortured lyrics.
LCD Soundsystem - On Repeat [mf]
Lady GaGa - Vanity (Bonus Track) [mf]
Kurupt ft. Nate Dogg - Gangsta Boogie [mf]
Digitalism - I Want I Want [mf]
David Bowie - Magic Dance [mf]
Yeah I went there, Labyrinth fans. If you're old enough to remember how awesomely eighties this movie is, you know this song is blockbuster gold.
Bloc Party - Flux (JFK Remix) [mf]
The Kinks - Everybody's Gonna Be Happy
MIA vs. Battles - Atlas Boyz (Diplo Remix) [mf]
Please Please snag! It's too crazygood to miss out on.
The Knux - Cappuccino [mf]
Kylie Mingoue - Heart Beat Rock (Benny Blanco Remix) [mf]
The Ramones - Let's Dance
