RIP

The Shins as we once knew them are officially dead. Pitchfork and Stereogum have both reported that keyboardist Marty Crandall and drummer Jesse Sandoval apparently "aren't in the band" anymore. James Mercer dishes on the lineup shuffle, as well as some other extracurricular projects aside from The Shins. Read the full article here.

Replacements include bassist Ron Lewis from Grand Archives + Fruits Bats and drummer Joe Plummer of Modest Mouse. In short, the fundamental changes were accredited to new composition/production ideas for their TBA fourth album.

This is rough for me. The only original members now remaining are (my unrequited love) Mercer and Dave Hernandez. And what a weird way to announce someone leaving - simply stating they are not a part of the band. Did they leave on the basis of creative difference/personal choice? Or were they more or less forced out of the band they originated? Either way it's sadness personified. I only hope this "new sound" isn't their grander intention to land on another movie soundtrack, commercial, or Starbucks compilation. How boring. How creatively pointless. Ultimately, I'm going to put my faith in James Mercer because nine year commitments don't come along too often for me. Show me this artistic RIP isn't all for some commercial crap, and I'll change my tune. Pun intended.

The Shins - Girl Inform Me [mp3]
From Oh, Inverted World (2001)

The Shins - Pink Bullets [mp3]
From Chutes Too Narrow (2003)

The Shins - Sea Legs [mp3]
From Wincing the Night Away (2007)

In honor of the dearly departed members, and perhaps an era in weightlessly jangling, revelatory indie-pop, here's a mini thematic mixtape. After this loss, you think the band will start feeling a Phantom Limb?

Embrace the Martian

I've been rocking out to Kid Cudi's Dat Kid from Cleveland mixtape for a bit now. You probably have been too. It hosts leaked/familiar tracks like "Sky Might Fall" (See Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen trailer), "I Poke Her Face," "Higher Up," "Sky High," "Switchin' Lanes," and the "09 Freestyle." I've never been able to get into mixtapes (not even Lil Wayne's massive collection), but Cudi is just so freaking likable, I'm starting to change my mind. It's close to the hate to love scenario.

But here's what makes me feel a little better about my masochism: Cudi doesn't pretend to be deep. He's not trying to be early Common Sense. He doesn't proclaim to be the best rapper alive, and he's openly admitted his rhymes lack substance. Honesty can go along way with me.

Kid Cudi - Can I Be [mp3]
Kid Cudi - Super Boo [mp3]
Kid Cudi - Higher Up [mp3]

More than anything off Cleveland, I'm loving on Kid Cudi's "Embrace the Martian." A track off the A Kid Named CuDi mixtape, it's floating around out there in the blogosphere. Go find it treasure seekers. Til you do, here's a little freestyle to keep you warm at night.

Embrace the martian,
I come in peace, but I need your rock in me,

Good, Friday I'm in Holy Week

I wouldn't classify myself as highly religious, but I can still observe Jesus' crucifixion and subsequent resurrection (or whatever your beliefs may be) with some great tunes. P.T. = Paschal Triduum = Party Time? Sidenote: I chose a random picture because my photographic search of "Good Friday'" kind of scared me.

Here's all the tracks I've been loving on lately. Some old, some new, all radical.

Good, Friday I'm in Holy Week Mixtape

The Thermals - Now We Can See [mp3]
The White Stripes - Dead Leaves and The Dirty Ground [mp3]
Paul Simon - You Can Call Me Al
Yeah I've got P Simon on here, but can you really hate on this song? WWJD?
Lykke Li - Dance Dance Dance (Grandtheft Remix) [mp3]
Like anything LL, so much fun
IAMX - Kingdom of Welcome Addiction
IAMX ft. Imogen Heap - My Secret Friend [mp3]
Handsome Furs - I'm Confused [mp3]
Deerhunter - Never Stops [mp3]
Kings of Leon - Fans (Live on Radio One) [mp3]
I might love on this live version more than the original
Conor Oberst - Eagle on a Pole
Buy the new album when it comes out, you won't regret it

Flashing Lights Will Make You Blind

Mixtapes by Mick Boogie popped up twice on my iTunes DJ this morning. Since there are no big coincidences or little coincidences, just coincidences (Seinfeld, anyone?) I thought I might need to blurb about them.

First, Mick Boogie lays his magic on Grammy-Award winning Adele and her debut album, 19 in his 1988 mixtape. I love on it for the sole reason that sometimes even songbirds benefit from a beat. My favorites:

Mick and Terry Urban tear up the Grammy nominees on 2009: The Grammy Remix Album. Don't grab your best stationary though; there's nothing to write home about. Considering the talent pool this year (Jonas Bros, Katy Perry, Coldplay, John Mayer?) seems to me they do a decent job of hammering silver out of tin, mediocre out of ... well, you decide.

My highlight. Radiohead is always magic.

I won't go on another tirade about how the Grammys have gone downhill. I'll just submit a quick opinion for public record. Under no circumstances should The Jonas Brothers be allowed to attend the same awards show as Radiohead, let alone be nominated for a similar honor. Parents invented the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards for a reason. Some artists deserve Grammys and some deserve surf boards and green slime. I'm just sayin'...

Fools Life

April Fools is killing me. YouTube didn't so much "get me" as annoy me when I tried to watch some Jon LaJoie before work. No biggie. But now every band and their mom are capitalizing on outrageously gullible fans (AKA yours truly). Sigur Ros irritated me when they announced a collaboration with Coldplay, and I wasn't overly thrilled to be informed NIN latest EP would be produced by Timbaland. Say what? APRIL FOOLS. I feel like I'm on the longest episode of Punk'd ever created. And there's not even any hot Ashton around to bust me up! Fortunately for the fool in all of us, this day will be over in less than twelve hours.

Now if only Joaquin Phoenix would jump out of the bushes and tell me his rap career has been a well-planned rouse...

You smell like onions. APRIL FOOLS. Or is it?

Stripped

In honor of the Cherrytree Sessions, take it down a notch, relax, and get your love on for these stripped versions of our favorite songs. Taking off your clothing is optional. Lady GaGa would certainly encourage it. That, and some Bowie like face-painting. Viva La Glitter!

Louden Up Now

Some songs just sound better blasted over your speakers. If you've already got these gems, but haven't tried raising the decibel level, give it a try. You won't be disappointed.

What Do You Think Will Happen Next?

... I'm honestly curious. I have been embarrassed to call myself an American for several years now, but with election of Obama (My first presidential vote!!), and the subsequent wave of enthusiasm for change, I feel a renewed optimism in both our country and it's citizens.

This song is full of "Yes I Can"s, but the real American sentiment of the zeitgeist is Yes We Can. That bright, bright, bright sunshiney day might not be so far away... And in the spirit of change, or the anything is possible, I'm changing our name. Goodbye UAFT, hello Get Down Moses. If you haven't guessed by now, The Clash is my all time favorite band, Joe Strummer is my complete idol/hero/marital fantasy, and this song title off Streetcore just seemed appropriate.

From the soundtrack of The Future is Unwritten, an amazing documentary about Joe. Just listening to his words about the power of the individual, the impact we have on each other, and the potential in each one of us for change, gives me chills. Miss you everyday JS...

Lydia's Yes We Can Mixtape

Pink Floyd - High Hopes
The Kinks - Something Better Beginning
Eric Clapton - Change the World
Common - It's Your World Pts. 1 & 2
Albertina Walker and the Caravans - Put a Little Love in Your Heart

Peace, Love, and name-changing HOPE,
LTK

Just Like a Woman

... to forget her own birthday. We turned one at Umbrellas back in October and instead of blowing out cyber candles we were too busy falling in love with fall to care. What is it about this season that makes me revert back to my five year-old enthrallment with a shiny new toy; my mind becomes silly putty at the sight of each metamorphosing tree, leaves burning from phoenix red to bronzey gold, only to be beaten into the wet cement by one of Seattle's famous rain spells. It's something so beautiful made even more brilliant by natural fatalism. Cyclical yes - but the birth and death of each tree, each season - it's unique from every other.

The Panics - Just Like a Woman (Dylan Cover) [ysi]
I told you Aussie's do it better. Well, at least pretty darn good. No one can sing this like Bob, whatever you might think of his troubador vocals.
Charlotte Gainsbourg & Calexico - Just Like a Woman (Dylan Cover) [ysi]

So as usual, I've been the neglectful parent. And rather than bore you with long explanations about my absence here is a mixtape of what I've been into lately. If tracks are on MUST HAVE albums, they're denoted with a star. Two stars are highly recommended for good health. Otherwise they're only singles and/or I haven't gotten around to tracking down the full release. You know how much time anticipating Britney's comeback occupies in my life? A lot. 'Nough said.

MIA ft. Blaqstarr - S.U.S. (Save Ur Soul) [ysi]
Lamb - Heaven**
If I could afford/not run screaming from drugs other than caffeine, I would do them to this song, while dancing around in my underwear of course
Mr. Oizo - Two Takes It* [ysi]
Remember the name, you won't be able to escape it soon
The Cool Kids - M & L Rock (Logarhythmix Mixtape for Obama)* [ysi]
Awesome remixes of a stellar album + even more kickass cause + free & legal = Gold
Lupe ft. Matthew Santos - Superstar (Radio One Live Version) [ysi]
Quick, before he retires, get Lupe while you can. Though I'm sure LupE.N.D. will be an amazing final act, we doubt the young stud will be able to stay away from the game forever. How well is that working out for Sean Carter?
The Replacements - Alex Chilton [Demo] [ysi]
Too much Rock Band for Lydia? Maybe. Or can "too much" of RB even exist?
Glass Candy - Beatific* [ysi]
MSTRKRFT feat. NORE - Bounce (A-Trak Remix)** [ysi]
A-Trak has to be the single most talented DJ for his age. I can't even stop bumping this song long enough to fully appreciate it
MIA ft. Wale - Boyz (Remix)** [ysi]
Wale, hurry up and debut all over me. America may not be ready but I am!
The Magnetic Fields - Absolutely Cuckoo*
What HASN'T 69 Love Songs done for indie music (lovers)?
The Bug - Poison Dart* [ysi]
Starfucker - German Love [ysi]
Lily Allen - Everyone's At It [ysi]
Raphael Saadiq - Sure Hope You Mean It*
On everyone's top album of the year list, hands down
Brenda Lee - Break it to Me Gently**
Bloc Party - Signs (MMMatthias Remix)** [ysi]
Say what you want about Intimacy critics, this song - and this remix - kills

Bonus: Kanye West vs. The Knife - High Heartbeats (A-Trak Remix)** [ysi]
Bonus: Kanye West vs. MGMT - Electric Touch** [ysi]

Beg Your Pardon

... But do imports just do it better? Seems like all the big players these days are hailing from abroad. Based on the success of the latest Radiohead and Coldplay releases one might wonder if American music still exists. Maybe it's not such a new trend though. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Clash, U2, Pink Floyd ... ringing any London/Dublin bells? However, what began as this audioholic's European fixation has migrated southwest for the duration. Perhaps in pursuit of tanner, more muscle clad men with a bigger investment in oral hygiene, my interest has found itself a new home on the shores of surfer central; the land down under, and title of the new Baz Luhrman production, Australia herself.

It's no secret that my taste flew south for the summer occasionally. How else would I know about/love AC/DC, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and in more recent years, Jet, Youth Group, and The Vines. Still its more contemporary acts that have been catching my two cents (or .99 - fascist itunes) lately. So for all you mates interested in Crocodile Dundeeing up a bit musically, here's an all Aussie mixtape for you. Just don't go hating New Zealanders all of a sudden. Kiwis made Flight of the Conchords; they can't be far away from genius.

PS. Aussie Slang for you.
Slag = Slut
Pash = Kiss
Boot = Trunk
Get Stuffed = Self-Explanatory

Josh Pyke - Beg Your Pardon [ysi]
My favorite new artist to chillax to. This song is irresistibly sweet, heartfelt, and oddly addicting. It's funny how you can miss someone/Even when they're sitting next to you/So I profess that loneliness isn't always by company, cured/ ... But oh no, around you I forget behavior/But if I begged your pardon might I once again be in your favor?/I know that I'm not the one of whom you think at night/But I know I/Presume to think I made you think of me right now
Red Riders - I Think You're Blind [ysi]
These boys know how to use a hook - line, and sinker. Though the ambiguity of their lyricism has me still scratching my head at certain phrases, I'm too busy singing along to this jam to notice. There's money so dirty/That I can't stand to touch it/It's not unusual this kind of crime/I think you're blind/I'd rather die
Youth Group - On a String [ysi]
I hang by a thread/Oh, let's go to bed/And get ourselves by
The Crayon Fields - Living So Well [ysi]
The Moldy Peaches meets The Decemberists. Add a little prep-school electronica and stir.
The Panics - Ruins [ysi]
I'm close enough to know you're near/But not enough to make it real/Have I become like all the others here/A ruin?/The deepest of all fears
Lowrider - Faded Dreams [ysi]
Machine Translations - You'll Change [ysi]
The Audreys - Small Things
Evermore - Light Surrounding You [ysi]
Red Riders - Crawl Back Baby [ysi]
Youth Group - Skeleton Jar[ysi]
The Boat People - Awkward Orchid Orchard
The Panics - Don't Fight It [ysi]
I left my heart in places/Forgot everyone of their faces/And tried to navigate a broken path of which I may have helped create/In any incident, this is never no accident/To stand alone and let the silence make itself at home

Peace Love and Hot Australian Surfer Boys, LTk

Blank Slate

Life is crazy. I now have three jobs, a promotion, one father in the hospital (out of surgery and recovering overnight), and no partridge in a pear tree. A shame since a pear sounds absolutely delicious right now...

In my down time, I've decided that I should only label my posts with song titles. That's my greatest achievement of the last two weeks. Other than the fact that I have burnt a hole in my Death Cab CD on track 11. My play count for "The Ice is Getting Thinner" has now skyrocketed to 178. And, wait for it..... I've spent way over my music budget in the last month. Shocking, eh? Pretty soon I'll be the most musically savvy homeless person on The Ave. Sure I'll have 17,659 songs on my Pod (I get it God - gluttony is a sin) but no place to sleep with the privilege of a door.

This week's headline comes ripped from The National's new EP, The Virginia. My fav track being the somber leadoff, "You've Done it Again, Virginia." However "Blank Slate" seemed to more accurately reflect my mood. Because I'm a woman, masochism is like breathing. And for some reason we like to believe we have all these fresh starts available whenever we need them. 95% of the time we're falsely naive, or otherwise mislead by the latest issue of Self or Cosmopolitan. Life doesn't really have a reset button or instant replay, no matter how much we want to believe the self-help section.
Freud's widely discredited theory of female masochism claims that cause of our pesky extra chromosome, our XX brains confuse basic concepts like pleasure and pain. By the time we're old enough to have some guy call us fat, disorientation kicks in, and we learn to love the insults. Touche (obviously sexist, antisemitic, and probably racist) Freud, touche. It sure explains why assholes who daily trash our self-esteem will always win our hearts over nice guys. Or even the moderately respectful, and occasionally polite.

In the face of reason, today is one of those days I'm into banking on a fresh start. And what goes better with a blank slate than anything? Seeing as it's blank, most everything. But I'm talking music. Mixtapes to be specific.

MGMT - Time to Pretend [ysi]
Addicting. Lyrically this song is genius, describing our generation to a T. The first time I looked at the lyrics I laughed, nearly cried, laughed again, and turned up the volume.
Bitter:Sweet - The Bomb
Jamie T - Sheila [ysi]
The Bar-Kays - Too Hot to Stop [ysi]
If you're feeling crummy, just flip on the first three minutes of Superbad, which, thanks to this band are completely unforgettable. Their career was tragically cut short by the same plane crash that stole musical genius Otis Redding. Fortunately, we have tracks like these to keep their message of soul alive.
NERD ft. Kanye West - Everyone Nose (Official Remix) [ysi]
Not awesome, but much better than the orig. What can you say about a song dedicated to the cocaine lifestyle of the rich and famous? I know! All the girls standing in line for the bathroom.
Machine Translations - You'll Change [ysi]
The only reaosn I still have a myspace - free music from the unsigned.
Tim Fite - Big Mistake [ysi]
"Everyone gets to make one big mistake / If you're waiting on me well, I guess you're gonna have to wait / Cause I'm saving mine up for a very very special day / When I can fuck it all up in the most spectacular way"
The Submarines - You, Me, & the Bourgeoise [ysi]
Mason Jennings - I Love You and Buddha Too [ysi]
Lykke Li - I'm Good, I'm Gone (Sumo Re-Edit) [ysi]
Everything she (re)touches turns to gold

Peace, love and records. LTK
